Matthew 7:1-20

– Make Right Judgments –

Southgate Alliance Church, July 12, 2020

Introduction – Wisdom

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight."
Proverbs 9:10

I. The Posture of Wisdom: Humility – 7:1-5

"Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us will give an account of himself to God." Romans 14:10-12

II. The Carefulness of Wisdom: Discernment – 7:6

"The church is too messy and the world too lost to be playing around with divisive people. Warn them, mark them, and avoid them. Stop letting scoffers and revilers set your agenda." Jared C. Wilson

"For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?" 2 Corinthians 2:15-16

III. The Source of Wisdom: Prayer – 7:7-11

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach,
and it will be given him." James 1:5

"If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:13

IV. The Heart of Wisdom: Love – 7:12

V. The Way of Wisdom: Jesus – 7:13-14

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Hebrews 12:1-2

VI. The Threat to Wisdom: Deception – 7:15-20

"They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‚Äč‘Peace, peace,’
when there is no peace." Jeremiah 6:14

"For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds."
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
